Ed Sheeran recently faced backlash for removing rapper Macklemore from his tour following the latter’s pro-Palestine remarks. This decision has stirred controversy among prominent figures in the music industry.
Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff criticized Sheeran’s move, arguing that the singer missed a significant chance to challenge billionaire interests. In an interview with The Guardian, Antonoff, known for his work with Taylor Swift, expressed disappointment over Sheeran’s decision to succumb to external pressure instead of taking a stand.
“If you think it is [controversial], you’re lost in some other sauce that is so crazy. They’re going to let some promoter tell me what I can say? Don’t book me. I’ll play for free outside,” Antonoff told the outlet.
Reports indicated that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was among the NFL team owners who allegedly threatened to bar Sheeran’s performances if Macklemore remained part of the lineup. Antonoff suggested Sheeran should have canceled the tour and organized free concerts outside the venues to defy such pressure.
“[Ed Sheeran] missed a massive, beautiful opportunity there: just cancel the whole tour, then play for free outside each venue, raise a bunch of money, rather than let a billionaire tell you what to do,” Antonoff said. He emphasized the broader issue of billionaire influence in society.
Sheeran addressed the controversy during a Philadelphia tour stop, acknowledging the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He expressed concern over the events in Israel and Gaza, condemning violence and calling for unity.
Several artists, including Finneas, Aaron Rowe, and Lukas Graham, withdrew from Sheeran’s tour in solidarity with Macklemore. Macklemore has since continued to advocate for his message through a “Free Palestine Tour.” Antonoff supported Macklemore’s stance, describing the issue as a “deeply human thing to say.”
Christian Toto, a film critic and founder of Hollywood in Toto, shared a contrasting opinion, suggesting Antonoff’s comments aimed to gain favor within the industry. Toto questioned the implications of canceling a tour, highlighting the potential impact on workers.
“If Sheeran scrapped his tour, how many workers would lose their jobs? And, if he did an alternative tour, how would they get paid?” Toto said.
Despite the debate, Antonoff continues to promote Macklemore’s message, encouraging open dialogue around issues of free speech and justice.
