A couple from West Virginia faces serious charges after an investigation exposed the alarming abuse and neglect of three children in their home. Authorities described the residence as a ‘house of horrors.’
Erica Lynn Sayre, 45, and Clifford Gale Sayre, 46, both residing in Evans, were arrested after a thorough investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Both face six felony charges, including child neglect posing risk of injury. Erica Sayre also faces charges for child abuse causing bodily harm, while Clifford Sayre is accused of child neglect resulting in injury.
‘One child described being struck in the head with an electronic device, causing a bleeding injury for which she was denied medical treatment,’ the sheriff’s office stated.
The children endured being hit, strangled, and deprived of basic needs like food and water. Disturbingly, soiled cat litter and dog feces were placed in their belongings. They were forced to run barefoot on gravel as punishment. Household items were used to strike them, and they had to endure humiliating acts like having soiled socks put in their mouths and forcibly cutting their hair.
One child reported a violent incident involving an electronic device that caused a bleeding injury but received no medical care. Another scary allegation is that one child was threatened with death if they contacted Child Protective Services.
Clifford Sayre allegedly witnessed and failed to stop the abuse. He is accused of holding a child’s hands while Erica cut the child’s hair with a razor, resulting in injury. According to a forensic interview, the children expressed their fear, saying, ‘Because mom hits us and Gale lets her.’
The Sheriff’s Department collaborated with Child Protective Services and a Child Advocacy Center to document the children’s scars. The evidence and children’s statements supported each other, leading to their removal from the abusive environment.
The investigation process involved multiple interviews, medical evaluations, and photographic documentation. Sheriff Ross Mellinger emphasized the significance of reporting child abuse to protect vulnerable children.
Despite efforts, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department was unavailable for comment to Fox News Digital.
