A group of renewable energy investors recently achieved a significant victory in Texas. They spent over $1 million to aid in defeating a prominent opponent of renewables. Now, these investors report having $15 million and aim to influence politics nationwide, including supporting Republicans who advocate for wind and solar energy.
Thomas Matzzie, a leader of the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC, stated, “This is an effort to shape a pro-clean-energy majority in Congress, regardless of party.” The funding comes from renewable energy developers and philanthropists, with significant backing from billionaire Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple.
On Thursday, the group expressed satisfaction as Representative Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, lost the runoff for his party’s primary for Texas attorney general. Roy previously led efforts to eliminate tax credits for wind, solar, electric vehicles, and other clean energy initiatives established under the Biden administration.
Competing against him, Mayes Middleton, a conservative state senator, accused Roy of lacking loyalty to former President Trump. The clean energy coalition supported this narrative, spending $1.1 million on advertisements. These ads highlighted Roy’s conflicts with Trump, questioning whether Roy was “MAGA enough for Texas.”
