Pro-Israel New Yorkers are set to gather on Sunday for the yearly Israel Day Parade. While the event traditionally sees participation from various city officials, this year marks a departure as Mayor Zohran Mamdani will not attend. His absence highlights diminishing public support for Israel and increasing incidents of antisemitism across the United States.
Mayor Mamdani reiterated last week that he would skip the parade, citing his ongoing opposition to the Israeli government. According to parade organizers, Mamdani could be the first New York City mayor to miss the event in its history, though complete attendance records since its 1964 inception are unavailable.
In a news conference on Thursday, Mamdani confirmed that Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch would represent his administration at the parade. Emphasizing safety, he noted that security would be remarkably heightened for this year’s event. “My commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all New Yorkers and events remains, whether I attend or not,” Mamdani stated.
Commissioner Tisch, who identifies as Jewish and has consistently supported Israel, described the parade as “one of the most joyful days of the year.” She will march alongside other participants to convey continued support from the mayor’s office.
The parade commences at 11:30 a.m. in Manhattan. Organizers and attendees are preparing for increased security measures to ensure a safe and secure event for all participants.
