FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown and the Capitol Cup Soccer Match
As the world anticipates the FIFA World Cup 2026, excitement is building around soccer in the U.S. This major global event draws attention to the upcoming Capitol Cup congressional soccer match. Former USMNT Midfielder Stu Holden joined Fox & Friends live from Audi Field to discuss the event and the growing enthusiasm for soccer in the United States. He addressed the national team’s status as underdogs in the World Cup before engaging in a penalty-kick challenge for entertainment.
Lawmakers and fans alike are preparing for the global tournament, which will feature matches in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. FIFA’s regulations for match days are notably strict, with recent changes tightening rules around refillable water bottles. Previously allowed under certain weather conditions, these bottles are now banned entirely to ensure player and attendee safety. FIFA’s spokesperson conveyed to Reuters that this decision aims to prevent any risks or injuries during the tournament.
Discussions of free water access in stadiums were significant for fans, especially those with Free Lions, a fan embassy supporting England’s national team. They expressed their disappointment online when FIFA’s initial promises, which included allowing refillable bottles, were revoked.
FIFA attributed the ban to policies implemented in certain hosting stadiums. With matches scheduled during the summer, concerns about heat have been prominent, particularly following the Club World Cup experiences last year. As a solution, FIFA proposed measures like shaded areas, misting systems, cooling buses, and expanded water distribution to combat extreme temperatures. It remains unclear if these provisions are confirmed.
During the games, players will be granted mandatory three-minute cooling breaks around the 22nd minute of each half, ensuring safety from heat exhaustion. Night matches and venues with domed structures, such as SoFi Stadium, AT&T Stadium, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, offer additional protection. The 2026 World Cup final is set for East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19 at 3 p.m. ET, potentially marking the highest temperatures of the day.
