In an unprecedented move, Australian authorities have confiscated over 100,000 live cockroaches from a single breeder. These cockroaches, illegal to keep in the country, mark the largest seizure of exotic invertebrates in Australia. The collection, valued at 200,000 Australian dollars ($142,000), was taken in May from a commercial breeder located in Bathurst, New South Wales. This action was confirmed by Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water.
The confiscated insects include Madagascar hissing cockroaches and dubia cockroaches. The Madagascar hissing species is among the largest of its kind, with sizes ranging from 2 to 3 inches in length. Department-released photos displayed these shiny, brown cockroaches, bigger than a person’s finger. Both the Madagascar hissing and dubia species are prohibited from being imported to Australia.
Australia’s native cockroach, much smaller in comparison, typically measures between 0.9 and 1.4 inches. The country’s subtropical climate supports the thriving of hundreds of cockroach species.
Local snake catcher Stefanie Lesser explained to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that these large cockroaches were likely marketed as reptile food. Their substantial size reduces the need for multiple insects, making them a cost-effective option. However, officials recommend the use of crickets or wood roaches instead for feeding reptiles.
Australia enforces strict biosecurity regulations to safeguard its agriculture, horticulture, and native wildlife from invasive pests. Violators of these regulations, including those who attempt to smuggle undeclared or illegal animals, insects, or plants, can face hefty fines.
These exotic cockroaches have not undergone environmental risk assessments, posing potential threats by spreading diseases or endangering native species. While there have been warnings of legal actions against individuals found with these banned invertebrates, the Bathurst breeder was not charged. The seized cockroaches are set to be euthanized, as stated by the department.
