Organizations providing food to millions face significant challenges. They struggle with budget cuts, inflation, and a growing number of people needing assistance. Now, the situation is exacerbated by the conflict in Iran, which forces these groups to make tough decisions.
Rising fuel costs are affecting the broader U.S. economy and now create difficulties for food banks that supply pantries across the nation. These costs have climbed considerably since the start of the war in Iran, significantly impacting operation budgets.
Every morning, Oregon Food Bank’s fleet of semi trucks departs from its central hub in Portland. They distribute canned goods, frozen meats, and fresh produce to pantries throughout the state. Some destinations, such as local churches and soup kitchens, are nearby. Others, like towns on the Idaho border, require a six-hour journey through challenging terrain.
Andrea Williams, the president of Oregon Food Bank, notes the surge in diesel prices. The organization now allocates around $20,000 more each month just for fuel. This increased expenditure directly limits the quantity of food they can distribute.
“It’s an opportunity cost,” Williams explains. “The money could instead purchase food for people, but it ends up spent on fuel.”
Americans experience the war’s impact when fueling their vehicles. As fuel prices ripple through the economy, their effects surface in unexpected places, including food banks vital to nationwide pantry supplies.
The reach of Oregon Food Bank is vast, operating from its distribution center in Portland. It supports pantries that serve up to 50 million Americans seeking emergency food annually, as reported by Feeding America in 2024. These pantries heavily depend on food banks to acquire and deliver provisions, often reaching underserved rural regions.
