Ras Baraka, the mayor of Newark, announced a reduction in the city’s police presence outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center. This facility, managed by the private company GEO Group, has been the site of persistent protests. These demonstrations have occasionally resulted in chaotic situations, prompting confrontations with local, state, and federal officers.
Baraka emphasized that the city’s funds, already under budget constraints, should not be used to safeguard a privately-operated facility. He expressed concern about the unnecessary risks posed to officers. The mayor claimed credit for a notable decline in unrest and specified that starting Friday, Newark police would prioritze traffic management and public safety. This strategy aims to protect both protesters and drivers.
The future roles of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and New Jersey State Police remain uncertain. Traditionally, state police assist local law enforcement upon request. Sean Higgins, speaking for Governor Mikie Sherrill, highlighted the governor’s commitment to ensuring humane treatment for detainees and their families at Delaney Hall. Newark continues to inform state authorities about ongoing circumstances, urging peaceful conduct from protesters.
ICE commented on the situation, affirming that the perimeter of Delaney Hall remains secure and unbreached. They asserted that anyone hindering law enforcement efforts or disturbing operations would be prosecuted. Their internal activities continue without interruption.
