Harvey Fire Department Investigates Possible Arson on Turlington Road
The Harvey Fire Department is currently investigating a fire that occurred on June 2 as a potential case of arson. The fire involved multiple abandoned homes on Turlington Road. According to the fire department’s statement, there is evidence suggesting the fires may have been deliberately set. More forensic analysis and investigation are needed to confirm this.
The fire started around 2:30 a.m. on the 15400 block of Turlington Road and was controlled by 4 a.m. On the same day, electricians discovered a kitten in the debris on the 5400 block of Turlington Road.
Fire Chief Howard Fisher emphasized the department’s commitment to identifying those responsible, stating, “The safety of our residents, businesses, and firefighters remains our highest priority.” The department is collaborating with state and local partners in the investigation.
The fire spread from two completely engulfed structures to two nearby abandoned buildings due to the intense heat and the hazards posed by active power lines. ComEd temporarily cut off the power for safety reasons. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Harvey recently furloughed about 40% of its city workers in October, declaring a state of financial distress. This included nearly half of the Fire Department. Over the past seven months, the city has relied on fire mutual aid from surrounding communities to address staffing gaps.
Authorities encourage anyone with information about the fires to contact them at 708-331-7720.
