Abdul El-Sayed Faces Backlash Over 9/11 Remarks and Association with Hasan Piker
Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, faced criticism on social media after his 9/11 message on his X account. He stated, “They didn’t just attack America that day; they attacked the idea of America.” He described the nation as bonded by ideals of freedom and justice, despite challenges in fully realizing these concepts.
El-Sayed’s comments were deemed controversial, drawing attention to his association with Hasan Piker, a progressive streamer known for his remarks about 9/11. Piker has previously claimed the U.S. “deserved 9/11,” sparking further scrutiny.
Criticism escalated online, with figures such as Steve Guest, a political commentator, highlighting the connection between El-Sayed and Piker. GOP consultant Ryan Girdusky labeled El-Sayed’s campaign dishonest due to his association with Piker.
El-Sayed’s ties with Piker remained a focal point, despite his efforts to clarify his stance. He stated that nobody speaks for his campaign other than himself and his spokesperson. Nevertheless, online commentators urged him to disavow Piker’s controversial statements.
El-Sayed’s focus lies in discussing pressing issues for Michigan voters, such as the economy and healthcare. However, Chuck Ross noted that El-Sayed’s message lacked mention of the wars following 9/11, a subject he usually addresses.
While El-Sayed has previously criticized military aggression, the response to his ties with Piker persists. Observers questioned the legitimacy of his campaign, considering his association with Piker and previous remarks on U.S. foreign policy.
Requests for El-Sayed’s campaign commentary on his relationship with Piker remained unanswered, leaving room for continued controversy.
