The Park Ridge Zoning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals have approved plans for Advocate Lutheran General Hospital to expand its cancer treatment facilities. This expansion aims to create a comprehensive cancer center that consolidates all cancer care services into a single building. The center will provide diagnosis, treatment, and various care components for patients, according to the hospital’s president.
Allison Wyler, the President of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, explained that having a standalone facility is beneficial. It offers a centralized location for patients and healthcare providers, reducing the need for immunocompromised patients to navigate a general hospital. Wyler emphasized the importance of a patient-centered approach that supports the entire cancer journey.
Currently, the hospital’s cancer care services exist but are not centrally located. The expansion will add two floors to the current Center for Advanced Care at 1700 Luther Lane, increasing the space from 99,602 square feet to 177,207 square feet.
Variations for required parking lot islands and space for a wall or fence were sought by the hospital. Developers proposed using shrubs around the perimeter, adding more green space for stormwater drainage. Landscape architect Steve Gregory noted the additional green space, exceeding requirements by 10%, offers a calming environment for cancer patients and an inviting entryway. Both zoning variances received approval.
With zoning approval, the matter will move to the city council for consideration, likely in July. Although there are similar centers at other Advocate locations, Wyler anticipates this center will become a destination facility. She expects completion by 2028 and foresees job creation, though specifics are still unknown.
