An Alaska election official decided on Monday that Daniel J. Sullivan, a candidate challenging incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, cannot appear on the primary ballot. The official cited attempts to confuse voters as the reason for this decision.
Daniel J. Sullivan announced his candidacy earlier this month, causing confusion before the August primary and concern among Republicans. Elections Director Carol Beecher stated in a letter that his candidacy lacked genuine intent and aimed to mislead voters, potentially compromising ballot fairness.
Beecher found that Daniel J. Sullivan attempted to file under the name “Dan Sullivan,” a name he never used for voting. He also tried to include “S” as his middle initial, mirroring the incumbent senator’s initial. Additionally, Beecher noted similarities in the two candidates’ campaign websites, suggesting intentional mimicry.
Sen. Dan Sullivan accused Democrats of trying to deceive Alaskan voters to influence elections. The National Republican Senatorial Committee and Alaska Republicans sought to remove Daniel J. Sullivan from the ballot. Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom launched an investigation into the matter last week.
It emerged that a political consultant for Daniel J. Sullivan has connections with the Democratic Party and Sen. Sullivan’s likely Democratic opponent, former Rep. Mary Peltola. Daniel J. Sullivan can still appeal the decision within 30 days.
The Alaska Senate race is anticipated to be highly competitive, with Democrats aiming to win the seat to gain control of the Senate. However, doing so remains challenging as President Trump won the state by 13 points in 2024.
