One of the major headlines as the NHL regular season concluded was speculation over whether Alexander Ovechkin was retiring. After much consideration, the hockey icon, known as the league’s top goal-scorer, will play at least another season.
The team confirmed on Thursday that Ovechkin has signed a one-year contract. The deal includes a $1 million salary, a $4.75 million games-played bonus for 10 games, and a $3.25 million signing bonus. As Puckpedia reports, this results in a $4,250,000 cap hit.
“I’m back!” Ovechkin announced in a press statement. “Thank you to everyone for the support. I’m healthy and eager to compete. I’m looking forward to rejoining my teammates and aiming for a playoff appearance. See you in September, DC!”
The news isn’t entirely unexpected. Observers speculated on Ovechkin’s return, especially after he turned down an opportunity to shake hands with the Pittsburgh Penguins following what might have been his last game against them.
His recent performance also supports the decision. Despite nearing 41, Ovechkin delivered a strong season with 64 points from 32 goals and 32 assists over 82 games.
This contract involves a significant 50% pay cut for Ovechkin, offering the Capitals more financial flexibility. This allowed the team to acquire players such as Boone Jenner and Alex Tuch during the off-season.
