Since its 2003 release by The White Stripes, Seven Nation Army has become a worldwide sports anthem. Its opening guitar riff is a staple at stadiums, sung by fans more than the original vocal line. Alan Siegel, a Washington, D.C.-based journalist notes its simple, catchy, and aggressive nature makes it perfect for sports settings.
Nate Sloan from the podcast Switched On Pop explains the riff’s appeal. It’s a minor key phrase with just five pitches. The rhythm holds suspense and urgency, enhancing memorability.
The Anthem’s Origin in Sports
The song’s rise as a sports anthem began in 2003 with Belgian soccer fans. Club Brugge KV fans sang it following a victory against A.C. Milan. The tradition spread to Italian fans, who embraced it during the 2006 World Cup, a year Italy won.
American Penn State fans adopted the anthem, starting its U.S. journey through college football and later to professional leagues including the NFL, NBA, and NHL. Stadiums widely played it, and music publishers distributed arrangements for marching bands.
A Universal Chant
According to Sloan, Seven Nation Army transcends other anthems due to its singability. Fans use the chant to praise players, especially with five-syllable names fitting its last five notes. NYC FC supporter Neil Govoni shares fans chant about players like Maxi Moralez and Andrea Pirlo.
Opinions vary on chants’ impact. NYC FC’s Sebastien Ibeagha says he’s too focused on the game to notice fan chants. Contrarily, Briana Scurry, Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion, appreciates the energy boost from unified fan support.
The Cultural Impact
Sloan highlights the significance of public group singing amidst music and arts education challenges. Such experiences can encourage musical interest. Neil Govoni acknowledges fan culture’s evolution, noting some songs aren’t as favored over time.
Despite some weariness, Siegel concurs the riff persists at major soccer tournaments. Its presence ebbs and flows but remains influential. Seven Nation Army continues as an emblem of fan unity in sports around the globe.
