Democrats in Congress are quiet following the Supreme Court’s decision about transgender athletes. The ruling allows states to prevent biological males from joining girls’ and women’s sports teams. This decision supports laws in Idaho and West Virginia and maintains similar laws in 25 states that limit team participation based on biological sex.
Republicans celebrated the court’s decision. However, states that permit biological males on girls’ teams remain unaffected. Progressive Democrats criticized the ruling, but most elected officials in the party did not publicly respond. No clear legislative steps were announced.
We are going to stand up for all women and girls, which includes trans women and girls,
said Rep. Sarah Jacobs, D-Calif., in a social media post, expressing support for transgender rights. Yet, Jacobs, a Democratic leader and task force co-chair, did not mention any legislative plans following the ruling.
The Congressional Equality Caucus and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., also did not propose any legislative action. The Equality Caucus condemned the ruling as devastating for transgender athletes on social media.
Public polling reveals widespread opposition to transgender athletes in women’s sports, even among Democrats. A New York Times poll in 2025 showed that nearly 80% of Americans, including 70% of Democrats or Democrat-leaning individuals, opposed biological males competing in women’s sports.
Centrist Democrats largely remained silent on the ruling. Few facing competition in re-election commented, including Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C. Davis released a statement supporting the ruling:
The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a significant ruling affirming that states possess the legal authority to maintain separate sports teams based on biological sex…
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., acknowledged the trans rights movement overlooked certain aspects of women’s sports. Perez shared that many were upset due to college athletic scholarship concerns.
The Senate showed minimal reaction. Some Democratic lawmakers did not respond when asked about potentially challenging the ruling in the future. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was notably silent, despite other posts about New York City’s Pride parade.
Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., vocalized his support for transgender athletes:
This decision tears trans athletes from their teams and the sports they love… We will keep fighting. Discrimination and hate will not win.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., accused right-wing extremists and the MAGA movement of targeting the trans community:
My heart is with trans kids and their loved ones… I won’t stop fighting for them.
