INDIANAPOLIS — Andrean High School faced a significant setback this year. On June 11, a tornado hit the school, causing extensive damage to both the infrastructure and the team’s baseball field. Despite these challenges, the team, led by junior third baseman Chase Nelson, rallied together with the community in mind during the Class 3A state championship game.
“It’s been difficult,” Nelson shared. “But our team got closer, aiming to achieve success for the school and the community. Although we reached the state championship, we couldn’t secure the win.”
The top-ranked Andrean 59ers aimed for their 10th state title but fell short, losing 9-3 to No. 2 Guerin Catholic. This marked Guerin’s first victory in a state championship game. Andrean coach Dave Pishkur acknowledged the strength of the opposing team, saying, “They were simply better today. Their pitching and hitting were superior to ours.”
Nelson did his share for Andrean, ending with two hits in four at-bats, including a run-scoring single. Defensively, he showed skill with key plays, such as catching a foul ball to wrap up the fifth inning. Though they used five pitchers, Guerin’s bats and a standout performance by their pitcher Tate Troxell made the difference.
Troxell, a recruit for the University of Alabama, allowed only one run over four hits and struck out 12. He presented a challenge with his high-velocity throws and tight slider.
Chase Nelson’s role in the team is notable, following in the footsteps of his brother Tyler, who was instrumental in previous Andrean championships. Although Chase couldn’t repeat his brother’s achievements, he valued the opportunity, commenting on the thrill of playing in front of a large crowd.
The team worked hard under unexpected conditions throughout the week. Due to their field’s damage, practices occurred at various locations. “We didn’t let it be an excuse,” Pishkur commented. “Even if we had perfect conditions, beating Guerin was unlikely that day.”
Transitioning to Class 4A next season, Andrean looks ahead with optimism. The future holds potential, as young players prepare to step up. “We have talent ready to develop,” Pishkur stated. “Competing in 4A will be tougher, but our program is built on resilience and growth.”
