Attempted Mass Shooting at Aurora Hindu Temple Thwarted
U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi reported an alarming event at the Aurora Hindu temple on a recent Sunday. Authorities charged a 19-year-old from Palatine with attempting a mass shooting at the temple.
Krishnamoorthi expressed his horror in a statement, saying, “I am horrified that a white supremacist attempted to carry out a mass shooting targeting Indian Americans at the Hindu temple in Aurora where my family worships.” The attempt failed when the suspect’s rifle jammed, according to Cook County prosecutors.
The suspect, Alexandros Paporakis, reportedly shared details of the incident with his colleagues and stated plans to make another attempt. These colleagues promptly alerted police, who managed to arrest him before he could act again. Palatine police arrested him Sunday evening as he left his residence on North Baldwin Drive.
Investigators discovered a document titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)” linked to Paporakis, containing extremist ideologies aligned with white supremacy. Officers also uncovered weapons, ammunition, tactical gear, body armor, and a patch with imagery tied to white supremacist extremism at his home.
Paporakis is currently detained at Cook County Jail, facing charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. He is set to appear in court on October 30.
The threat of such violence shows how dangerous anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy have become, and we cannot wait until innocent people are killed to take these threats seriously,
Krishnamoorthi stressed.
The Consulate General of India commended the swift actions of law enforcement in a statement, expressing gratitude for the prompt intervention. The statement added, “We are in touch with members of the Indian diaspora and are monitoring developments.”
