Bill Maher, a frequent critic of President Trump, will be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday. This occasion presents itself at a politically sensitive moment for the arts institution, once associated with President Trump.
Maher, known for his sharp wit as a late-night host, has often criticized the president on his HBO show “Real Time With Bill Maher.” He has described Mr. Trump as resembling an emperor and criticized his actions, describing them as anti-democratic, corrupt, and damaging to various social groups. Maher does not only target the president and his party but also voices his discontent with “woke” progressivism among Democrats.
The Kennedy Center, under Mr. Trump’s chairmanship, is embroiled in a legal battle concerning how much influence the president and his allies should exert over the institution. Recently, a federal judge ordered Mr. Trump’s name to be removed from the center’s marble facade, a decision currently under appeal.
Despite the divisiveness surrounding the Kennedy Center, Maher has chosen to accept the honor, at a time when many artists avoid affiliations with the center. Sunday’s ceremony, airing on Netflix on July 21, will feature tributes and humorous roasts of Maher from a star-studded lineup. Noteworthy attendees include comedians Louis C.K., Jay Leno, and Whitney Cummings, actor Woody Harrelson, singer John Mellencamp, businesswoman Arianna Huffington, and sports commentator Stephen A. Smith, who has had public disagreements with the president.
