Prospects Take to the Ice
As the Chicago Blackhawks continue their development camp, young prospects engage in drills guided by development coaches like Kendall Coyne Schofield. These skaters are getting acclimated to the Hawks’ system. The new class, including No. 35 pick Ryan Roobroeck, begins their Chicago journey, marking the city as remarkable. Previous draftees from 2025 hope to establish a more permanent connection to Chicago soon.
Here’s an update on the next steps for the Hawks’ 2025 class.
Václav Nestrašil
Václav Nestrašil, a 19-year-old right winger, practiced at the Blackhawks Ice Center. Over the winter, he won a silver medal for Czechia in the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championships. Despite Sweden’s victory led by Anton Frondell, Nestrašil values the experience. He commented lightheartedly on their rivalry.
Nestrašil transitioned to college hockey with UMass, scoring 31 points in his first season. The jump to NCAA competition proved challenging but rewarding. “It’s tough when everyone is bigger and stronger, but I adapted,” stated Nestrašil of his development.
Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 205 pounds, Nestrašil will continue with the Minutemen, now joined by fellow draft pick Samu Alalauri. Having interacted post-draft, Nestrašil appreciated Alalauri joining the team and expressed enthusiasm about their future collaboration.
Mason West
Mason West, marked as a “dual-athlete” by capturing a state football championship, will now focus solely on hockey. He swapped sports for the USHL’s Fargo Force, scoring 25 points in 38 games. West emphasizes that his time as a quarterback aids his ice vision.
Invited to the World Junior Summer Showcase and committed to Michigan State for the 2026-27 season, West relishes upcoming opportunities at higher levels. He is focused on further developing his physical presence, skating skills, and utilizing his 6-foot-6 frame to his benefit.
Nathan Behm
Nathan Behm, another standout at camp, spent three seasons with the Kamloops Blazers. In the 2025-26 season, he amassed 86 points in 67 games. Ahead of joining Arizona State, Behm aims to increase his speed and explosive moves for the college circuits.
Julius Sumpf
Selected at No. 98 in 2025, Julius Sumpf completed his first NCAA season at Providence College. With 21 points in 36 games, Sumpf reflects on adapting to older, more robust players. He remains optimistic about his next season alongside teammate John Mustard.
Parker Holmes
Parker Holmes, 19, drafted No. 107 in 2025, transitioned from Brantford Bulldogs to the Sarnia Sting. With 17 points in the previous season, Holmes looks for continued growth with his new team.
Ashton Cumby
Ashton Cumby prepares for his professional journey with a two-year AHL stint with the Rockford IceHogs. Having shown progress in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds — 17 points and a +13 rating — Cumby aims to make a strong impression at Rockford.
