Burning Cross in Grant Park Sparks Shock and Investigation
An unusual and unsettling event unfolded in Chicago’s Grant Park on Tuesday when a burning cross captured the attention of many. Chicago police spent several hours investigating this incident, which stirred strong emotions across the community.
The burning cross was visible to those traveling along Columbus Drive. Witnesses, including Keinika Carlton and her daughter, Alyna, were left in disbelief. Keinika expressed her astonishment at the sight, questioning how such an incident could occur in full view without more intervention or witness reports.
“I’m surprised there wasn’t more people watching this,” Keinika remarked, speaking on how the incident brought back painful memories.
Reflecting on her family’s past experiences in the South, Keinika felt a deep sadness. Alyna, her daughter, shared this sentiment, noting that despite perceptions of progress, events like this demonstrate enduring issues.
“It’s very hurting. Even in schools, they make it seem like things like that was so long ago and we’re making so much progress, and we’re clearly not,” Alyna shared.
Chicago Police Department provided limited information about the incident, leaving the motive unclear. Keinika emphasized the historical context of cross burnings, particularly their use against Black people in the South.
Both mother and daughter stressed that such acts, especially in public settings, should concern everyone. They also highlighted potential safety risks.
“That could have gotten really out of control. It could have caught fire to all those trees over there and everyone in the area … people could have suffered,” Keinika pointed out.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames shortly before 2:30 p.m. Fortunately, the fire did not spread beyond a tree trunk and some leaves.
Investigators are trying to determine the motive behind the act and whether it was racially motivated or related to another issue. The duration of the fire and whether the cross was carried into the park or constructed there remains unclear. As of now, no arrests have been made.
