Los Angeles County’s Ballot Count
Election officials in Los Angeles County are steadily processing the ballots from Tuesday’s primary election, but over 700,000 are still uncounted. Dean Logan, L.A. County Registrar-Recorder, reported processing over 77,500 ballots since election night, bringing the total count to almost 1.4 million. This accounts for about 23.7% of registered voters. As of Wednesday evening, officials estimated 713,180 ballots remained uncounted. This includes 700,000 vote-by-mail, 11,340 conditional voter registration, and 1,840 provisional ballots. The count is ongoing and will include additional mail ballots postmarked by election day arriving through next Tuesday.
Los Angeles Mayoral Race
In the L.A. mayoral race, incumbent Karen Bass is leading and has secured a place in the November 3 runoff. She’s currently ahead of her main challengers, Spencer Pratt and Nithya Raman, as vote counting continues. Bass emphasized her commitment to improving housing, public safety, and local economic conditions to supporters.
California Governor’s Race
The gubernatorial race is tightly contested between Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra. Both candidates currently lead in a crowded field, with Democrat Tom Steyer trailing. Vote counting is ongoing, and any official outcome remains pending due to California’s extensive voting and counting procedures.
Key Ballot Measures
Shasta County Measure B
Shasta County voters are leaning towards approving Measure B, a proposal aiming to overhaul local elections. This measure would mandate in-person voting, limit vote-by-mail, and require voter IDs, potentially contravening state law. Its passage could lead to legal challenges given the measure’s conflict with existing election regulations.
Monterey Park Data Center Ban
Residents of Monterey Park voted to ban data centers, making it the first U.S. city to do so by public vote. Measure NDC had significant support, reflecting growing local opposition to data centers proposed for residential areas.
Significant Federal and State Races
In federal elections, notable races include Rep. Jimmy Gomez facing Angela Gonzales-Torres in the 34th District and Rep. Brad Sherman advancing with Larry Thompson in the 32nd District. At the state level, Attorney General Rob Bonta will face Michael Gates in the November general election.
Election Process and Voter Engagement
The lengthy California vote-counting process emphasizes voter convenience, contributing to extended timelines in declaring winners. Although early returns can suggest trends, final outcomes often take days to confirm as mail-in and provisional ballots are processed and verified.
