The Stanley Cup Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights has delivered an intense showdown. After four thrilling games, two of which took place in Vegas, the series returned to Raleigh for a pivotal Game 5. Both teams were tied at 2-2 entering this match.
The game began with a slower pace compared to previous clashes, which had been marked by rapid action. However, penalties have been a consistent theme. Carolina faced challenges with self-inflicted penalties, which played a critical role in the game.
Vegas’ Pavel Dorofeyev was first to score, taking advantage of a power play opportunity. The Hurricanes’ Nikolaj Ehlers had been penalized minutes earlier for shooting the puck over the glass. Dorofeyev capitalized quickly with help from Jack Eichel’s assist.
Soon after, Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal responded, equalizing the score. Staal redirected a pass from Ehlers, marking his fifth consecutive game scoring in the Final. This achievement tied a record for the longest goal streak in Stanley Cup Final history. Staal’s performance has exceeded expectations, having scored just two goals in the postseason before this series.
As the second period began, Carolina had to kill another penalty. However, it was Vegas’ penalties that shaped the period’s events. Jeremy Lauzon’s roughing penalty followed by Brayden McNabb’s cross-checking gave Carolina a power play opportunity. Andrei Svechnikov seized this chance, putting the Hurricanes in the lead at 2-1.
Later, another of Carolina’s top players, Sebastian Aho, found the net, extending the lead further. Adding to Vegas’ troubles, key player William Karlsson had to exit the game and did not return.
Entering the third period, Vegas continued to struggle with penalties. Mark Stone’s high-sticking infraction against Jalen Chatfield drew blood, resulting in a double minor. Svechnikov took full advantage, scoring again to give Carolina a commanding 4-1 lead.
Yet, true to this series’ pattern, Vegas rallied. Dorofeyev added his second goal of the game, narrowing the gap to 4-2. Vegas mounted significant pressure, leading to several scoring opportunities.
With the clock winding down, Ehlers was penalized again for delay-of-game, and Vegas pulled their goalie, creating a 6-on-4 power play. Despite strong attempts, including a promising chance for Tomas Hertl, Carolina’s Brandon Bussi stood firm with 22 saves on 24 shots.
The Hurricanes’ penalty kill allowed them to attempt long-distance shots at the empty net, which helped run down the clock. Eventually, Carolina secured the game with a final score of 4-2. The series now moves back to Vegas, with Carolina leading 3-2. They have the opportunity to clinch their second Stanley Cup in franchise history during the next game at T-Mobile Arena.
