As a parent dealing with screen-addicted children, I initially welcomed Australia’s decision to ban social media for users under 16. Inspired, I started a ‘Take Back Control’ WhatsApp group with other parents to impose our own ban, though much to the embarrassment of my kids. Unfortunately, our efforts were not successful, and Australia’s attempt faces significant hurdles too.
Authorities globally are increasingly apprehensive about the impact of social media on children. Recent bans in Britain and Canada indicate a growing trend. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain.
My colleague, Victoria Kim, reports on Australia’s ongoing battle with teenage social media use.
Over the last six months, Australia has discovered a challenge familiar to many parents: teenagers are difficult to deter from pursuing what they want. In December, Australia spearheaded a ban preventing those under 16 from accessing popular social media platforms. This initiative has attracted global attention from governments, researchers, and concerned parents. The long-term effects of social media on young minds are a pressing worry for educationalists and parents across the globe.
Several other nations are considering following Australia’s example, although success is not yet assured.
