The Chicago Bears are confronting a major hurdle on their defense. Veteran defensive end Montez Sweat faces a two-game suspension without pay for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sweat will be eligible to return to the lineup on Friday, October 23, following the Bears’ matchup with the New England Patriots in Week 7.
This suspension leaves the Bears without one of their key defensive players at a crucial time in their season. The team is attempting to rebound from a significant 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Prior to this setback, the Bears had secured two consecutive wins against the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Jets, building some early momentum.
Montez Sweat joined the Bears from the Washington Commanders during the 2023 season. Selected 26th overall by Washington in the 2019 NFL Draft, he played over four seasons with the Commanders. Chicago acquired him in exchange for a second-round draft pick and committed to him with a four-year, $98 million contract extension.
In his first full season with Chicago in 2024, Sweat notched 5.5 sacks, bringing veteran leadership to a developing defensive line. He improved his performance in 2025, recording 10 sacks and remaining a key pass-rusher for the Bears. Although he has only captured two sacks this season, his ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks is crucial to the team’s defensive tactics.
With Sweat’s suspension, head coach Ben Johnson and his staff must navigate the defensive changes required. Replacing his production is not the only concern, as the Bears need other defensive linemen to step up and maintain pressure on opponents. Achieving consistency after an uneven start is vital for the team.
The Bears currently have a 3-2 record, showing potential but also facing setbacks in losses to Minnesota and Green Bay. Their defense performed well in some games, such as holding Philadelphia to seven points and the Jets to 12. Yet, the Green Bay loss highlighted areas needing improvement. Allowing 31 points to the Packers raised questions about their ability to face strong opponents.
The suspension of Sweat compounds these concerns. The specific substance involved has not been disclosed in initial reports. Pending his suspension, Chicago focuses on upcoming games without his established defensive contributions. The Bears aim to remain competitive within the NFC North but must ensure their defense continues to perform effectively during this period.
With crucial games on the horizon, Chicago cannot afford to have the suspension of a top pass-rusher stall their progress.
