Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is facing scrutiny for his frequent fumbles this season. Cook ranks third in the NFL with 532 rushing yards, following a league-leading 1,621 yards last year. Despite his success on the ground, Cook has fumbled four times in the season’s first five games, including twice in the recent 37-34 overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams. His tendency to lose the ball nearly cost the Bills the game.
At age 27, Cook fumbled six times last year and has committed 11 fumbles over his last 23 games, including the playoffs. This issue is becoming increasingly frustrating for head coach Joe Brady.
“Right now, we’re putting the ball in harm’s way,” Brady noted. “The way that we lose football games is we turn the ball over. Our two best players turned the ball over last night, and James has put the ball on the ground.”
Brady acknowledged Cook’s talent, emphasizing his impressive running while stressing the need for improvement in ball security. Brady has confidence in Cook and reinserted him into the game. However, warned that the consequences for further fumbles could affect Cook’s playing time.
“At some point there have to be consequences when we’re putting negative stuff out there. James knows it’s important to him. That can’t happen, and it’s going to cost us football games.”
If coach Brady decides to limit Cook’s role, backup running back Ray Davis may get more opportunities. Davis contributed 275 rushing yards, 86 receiving yards, and two touchdowns last season. The team also has Ty Johnson and Frank Gore Jr., who could receive increased carries.
