The San Francisco 49ers prepared for a challenging situation concerning linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s status for the upcoming Week 6 “Monday Night Football” game against the Washington Commanders. Greenlaw, a vital player in the 49ers’ defense, received a one-game suspension from the NFL. This came after Sunday’s narrow 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, where he headbutted Ernest Jones, who was not wearing a helmet.
The 29-year-old Greenlaw was ejected after the incident and appealed the suspension. The NFL released a decision on Tuesday regarding his suspension appeal. “Hearing officer James Thrash, appointed by both the NFL and NFLPA, confirmed the one-game suspension of San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw,” stated Michael Signora, NFL senior VP of football & international communications, on X.
Greenlaw’s suspension is a significant blow for the 49ers. He ranks second in team tackles, totaling 37, just behind Fred Warner, who has 50. This absence is particularly troubling as San Francisco has already been hit hard by injuries this season.
Currently, the 49ers have eight players on injured reserve. The list includes defensive tackles Alfred Collins, Sam Okuayinonu, and CJ West, as well as defensive ends Andrew Farmer II and Mikail Kamara. Linebacker Nick Martin, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safety Darrick Forrest also remain sidelined.
In addition, injuries have also removed key players like edge-rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle James Thompson Jr., and safety Marques Sigle from the lineup.
This situation gets more complicated with linebacker Garret Wallow out for several games due to a hamstring injury. The shortage leaves only Fred Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford, and Ogbo Okoronkwo available for the Monday game, significantly limiting the linebacker depth for the 49ers.
