Chicago Violence Sparks Tensions Between Local Leaders and Trump
Amid a violent Juneteenth weekend in Chicago, tensions have risen between local leaders and former President Donald Trump. Father Michael Pfleger, a well-known priest in Chicago, criticized Trump’s comments on social media about the violent incidents. Over the weekend, at least six people were killed, and more than 30 were injured in shootings across the city.
Weekend Violence and Trump’s Reaction
The Chicago Police Department reported that from Friday evening to Sunday night, 39 people were shot, with six fatalities. Former President Trump responded by proposing the use of federal forces to curb the violence in Chicago. In a post, he commented on the high number of shootings, questioning why Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker had not contacted him for assistance.
“Lots of Killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 Dead,” Trump wrote. “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S. President DJT.”
Father Pfleger, serving at St. Sabina Catholic Church, dismissed Trump’s comments as dishonest and urged him to restore funding for gun violence prevention programs, claiming the former president had previously cut funds for these initiatives.
Calls for Local Solutions
In response to the shootings, community leaders met at City Hall to advocate for a Department of Gun Violence Prevention. This department would concentrate on decreasing gun violence and organizing prevention efforts across the city.
Diverging Views on Solutions
Despite the push for federal assistance, city and state officials have resisted. They favor investing in community-level crime prevention methods. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson highlighted Trump’s previous successes in lowering crime rates in cities like Washington, D.C., urging Chicago leaders to follow suit.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed that Trump’s administration has cut crucial funding for programs that make communities safer. He argued that Trump’s policies have worked against efforts to enhance safety through education, housing, and healthcare.
Johnson noted that while Trump’s agenda included similar community support initiatives, his administration failed to enact them effectively in Chicago.
