The Chicago White Sox demonstrated impressive power during their 7-1 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Despite Munetaka Murakami’s absence due to a hamstring injury, the Sox showed strength at Rate Field.
Edgar Quero, Colson Montgomery, and Andrew Benintendi delivered key home runs. Quero and Montgomery each hit solo home runs, while Benintendi added a two-run shot.
Manager Will Venable praised the team’s energy and culture. “When you build a strong culture, it sustains the team despite key absences,” he said.
Team Performance
The Sox, now at 31-27, are four games over .500. Before Saturday’s game, Murakami was placed on the 10-day injured list. He leads the team with 20 home runs and might be out for four to six weeks.
The team capitalized on Tigers starter Framber Valdez’s early wildness. Chase Meidroth started the first inning with a double, followed by walks to Miguel Vargas and Montgomery. A wild pitch scored Meidroth. Quero’s sacrifice fly brought Vargas in, making it 2-0.
Detroit’s Wenceel Pérez hit a solo homer in the third, the Tigers’ only run. Sox starter Anthony Kay gave up six hits, walked one, and struck out three in over five innings.
Strong Defensive Plays
The Tigers threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, but Kay’s timely groundballs kept them scoreless. In the sixth, reliever Grant Taylor maintained the Sox’s lead by retiring three batters after a fielding error loaded the bases.
Trevor Richards, the Sox’s closing pitcher, celebrated with Quero after the win. Kay acknowledged Taylor’s crucial role. “He saved the day, allowing us to secure the win,” Kay said.
The team’s seventh inning saw Quero hit his second season home run. Benintendi doubled and scored on Rikuu Nishida’s single. Montgomery and Benintendi each hit home runs in the eighth.
Looking Ahead with Jacob Gonzalez
Despite Murakami’s absence, the team’s mindset remains strong. The injury allowed for the call-up of Jacob Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte. Gonzalez celebrated his 24th birthday by joining the team.
Gonzalez has been performing well with the Knights, shown by his .317/.419/.668 slash line and 19 home runs in 52 games. “I’ve found a comfortable and successful balance,” he said.
Primarily a shortstop, Gonzalez is also an option for first base with the Sox. “I’m ready to play anywhere and help the team win,” he stated.
This victory highlights the Sox’s resilience and depth in their lineup, even amid setbacks.
