The sports community mourns the loss of Claude Lemieux, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, who passed away at 60. Lemieux’s death was unexpected, especially after his recent appearance at the Montreal Canadiens’ home arena. During this event, he carried the torch before Game 3 against the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final.
Lemieux, known for wearing the red and blue Canadiens sweater, No. 32, brought a flame to the rink, marking a memorable moment. His passing prompted an outpouring of tributes, with his daughter sharing memories of a respected and, at times, polarizing hockey figure.
After reposting a New Jersey Devils tribute, Claudia Lemieux expressed her grief, writing, “No words to express the level of devastation we feel. I love you forever daddy. Forever your only girl.”
Brendan Lemieux, Claude’s son, also paid tribute by uploading a family photo online. He stated, “I love you dad! My son’s favorite person is going to watch from above for a while. We will see you.” Brendan has continued his father’s hockey legacy, playing in the NHL, with his most recent stint being with Carolina in the 2023-24 season.
In 1986, Claude Lemieux scored one of the most iconic goals in Canadiens history. As a rookie, he sent a backhand shot over goal Mike Liut’s glove during Game 7 of the second round. His contributions were also recognized at the Colorado Avalanche’s 30th celebration of the 1995-96 season.
Born in Mont-Laurier, western Quebec, Lemieux was celebrated for his unique ability to annoy opponents while gaining respect from teammates. Former Canadiens center Doug Gilmour noted, “He was a pain in the a– to play against, but you wanted him on your team.”
Claude Lemieux left a lasting legacy in the world of hockey, cherished by both loved ones and fans.
