Clive Davis, a prominent figure in the music industry, has passed away at the age of 94 at his home in Manhattan. Davis, who gained fame as a starmaker, shaped the careers of numerous iconic musicians such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Barry Manilow.
Rising through the ranks from a legal position at Columbia Records, Davis became one of the most influential music executives. In the late 1960s, he guided Columbia Records into the rock era with acts like Janis Joplin and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and encouraged jazz trumpeter Miles Davis to reach the Woodstock generation.
Later in his career at labels like Arista and J, Davis championed pop divas such as Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. He recognized the potential of hip-hop and facilitated significant career revivals for musicians like Carlos Santana and Rod Stewart, leading to multi-million selling albums.
In 2021, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio enlisted Davis to organize a “homecoming” concert in Central Park following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. Though a storm interrupted the show, it highlighted Davis’s enduring impact.
Known for his elegance and charisma, Davis often appeared in media wearing brightly colored suits. Despite his Brooklyn roots, his speech carried an air of European sophistication.
Remembered as a relentless seeker of hits, Davis’s career survived many industry changes. His final role was as chief creative officer at Sony Music Entertainment, cementing his legacy as a constant presence in the music world.
