Colin Gray Sentenced for Role in Apalachee High Shooting

Colin Gray, the father of Apalachee High School shooter Colt Gray, received a 15-year prison sentence on Thursday. A Georgia judge criticized him for ignoring critical warning signs before the school massacre in 2024.

Judge’s Remarks and Sentencing

Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm stated that Gray “failed as a parent,” highlighting increasing warning signs. Despite these, Gray did not stop his son’s access to firearms or seek necessary mental health treatment.

Judge Primm told Gray, “The weight of your crimes is tethered and tied to the acts of someone else, your son.” Gray was convicted in March on 27 counts, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. He had provided the AR-15-style rifle used in the attack, despite concerns over his son’s mental health.

During the hearing, victims’ family members urged the judge for the maximum sentence due to the ongoing pain from the 2024 shooting. Shayna Aspinwall, widow of slain teacher Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall, expressed her struggles with PTSD and raising her two daughters alone.

“Our daughters must grow up without their father,” Aspinwall testified. “They will miss his guidance, his encouragement, his hugs, and all the milestones he should have been here to witness.”

While Colin Gray did not fire the weapon, his parental failures and improper firearm management contributed to the tragedy.

Legal Context and Impacts

Judge Primm explained the sentence as rooted in criminal negligence. He argued Colin Gray could have taken preventive measures before the tragedy, such as locking firearms, removing ammunition, or relocating the weapons while seeking mental health help for his son.

The Apalachee High School attack resulted in the deaths of teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Nine others were injured. Prosecutors noted Gray’s continued provision of firearm access despite observable signs of his son’s mental decline.

Colin Gray’s case is notable as he is one of the few US parents charged in connection with a school shooting by their child, making him the first in Georgia.

The school opened its doors for a new academic year on Friday.
