A couple from Coachella Valley, found dead last week, might have been victims of a long-running scam by someone impersonating actor Tom Selleck. Donald Whitaker, 80, and his 79-year-old wife, Karen Whitaker, were found by Riverside County sheriff’s deputies on a Friday afternoon in their home. A neighbor had requested a wellness check.
Authorities discovered the couple with traumatic injuries and declared them dead at the scene. Investigators are examining the case, but there’s no indication yet if the alleged scam is connected to their deaths.
They lived in the exclusive golf community of Bermuda Dunes, east of Palm Desert. Riverside County officials have not provided updates on the investigation.
According to Coachella Valley’s ABC affiliate KESQ, family friend Joy Miedecke revealed that someone posing as Selleck, known for his role in CBS’s “Blue Bloods,” contacted Karen Whitaker. Joy Miedecke, president of the East Valley Republican Women Patriots, shared that her friend fell victim to the scam.
After Karen posted a memorial on Facebook, this fraudulent Selleck contacted her, claiming to have a mutual connection through the deceased friend, sparking a deceptive relationship.
Karen Whitaker started sending money in the form of gift cards, with amounts escalating from $80 to $800. Despite alerts from Miedecke and intervention from family members who blocked her financial accesses, Karen continued to believe in the scam.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has not commented on these scam claims.
