Cruise Promotes Low-Carb Diet for Lifelong Health
A unique cruise is helping participants learn about low-carbohydrate diets, a strategy that one woman attributes to her weight loss success after struggling for years. Debbie Hubbs, aged 73, from Arizona, co-founded the Low Carb Cruise following her personal experience with low-carb eating, which she describes as transformative.
Origins of the Low Carb Cruise
The idea for the annual cruise emerged when Hubbs connected with a fellow dieter online in 2008. Sharing a mutual love for cruises, they invited others from their online community to join them. The first Low Carb Cruise saw about 30 people on board. Last year, attendance soared to over 360 passengers sailing to Alaska.
Activities and Seminars
The cruise, primarily hosted on Royal Caribbean ships, offers group meals and activities. Over its 20 voyages, the cruise has become a platform for educational seminars focused on carbohydrate reduction, featuring speakers from the ketogenic community.
“We play together, we dance together,” Hubbs said. “It’s like sailing with friends and family.”
Inclusion and Community
The cruise attracts first-timers and loyal participants from around the globe, including countries such as Iceland, South Africa, and Australia. Michelle Hall, a committee member from Arizona, understands the struggle with diets, having grappled with weight issues since childhood. Her turning point came in 2020 when she committed to the keto diet during the pandemic.
“The overwhelming response [on Facebook] was the community,” Hall stated.
Impact on Lives
Some cruisers report transformative experiences. One cited her journey to completing her first 5K, while another pursued further academic goals in health sciences due to the inspiration drawn from the cruise.
Philosophy and Freedom
The Low Carb Cruise emphasizes personal choice and mental readiness for dietary change. Organizers stress that passengers are not judged for food choices. The event promotes healthy eating without enforcing strict dietary rules, fostering a supportive atmosphere.
“There’s no low-carb police,” Hall affirmed. “This is your vacation.”
The Low Carb Cruise website clarifies that it does not endorse any specific low-carb lifestyle, allowing passengers freedom in their health journey.
