The Los Angeles Philharmonic has appointed Daniel Harding as its 12th music director, succeeding Gustavo Dudamel. Harding will begin his six-year contract in fall 2027, performing up to twelve concerts each season. This appointment comes nearly 30 years after his U.S. debut with the L.A. Phil in 1997.
Harding, a British conductor born in Oxford in 1975, has a celebrated international career. He began his journey at age 17 as Simon Rattle’s assistant at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. His experience spans major orchestras across Scandinavia, Germany, Paris, Japan, China, and Rome. Furthermore, Harding holds a pilot’s license and occasionally flies commercial aircraft for Air France.
Despite his impressive background, Harding presents a British reserve, contrasting the flashy demeanor often associated with top conductors. His desire to explore challenges, such as learning to fly, reflects his broad interests beyond music.
L.A. Phil President Kim Noltemy indicated that Harding was overwhelmingly favored by the orchestra’s players. They believe he can elevate their performance while meeting organizational goals.
The L.A. Phil’s scope extends beyond traditional classical music. It includes education, pop and film music, Latin culture, and visual arts. A diverse leadership, with titles including honorary positions and creative directors, supports these ambitions.
Harding’s affinity with other notable figures such as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Anna Handler further strengthens his position. His previous collaborations with Dudamel and Salonen, including work at the Baltic Sea Festival, highlight his readiness to lead.
Harding plans to develop his vision for the orchestra over time, building on relationships with esteemed colleagues. He aims to take the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) on tour in 2029, coinciding with architect Frank Gehry’s centenary.
Currently, Harding continues his tenure with the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, but he professes a love for flying. Noltemy notes a humorous addition to Harding’s pursuits — training for Air France’s new transatlantic jets for flights between Paris and L.A.
