David Peterson’s recent trade to the Chicago Cubs introduced him as a strategic asset, particularly due to his high ground-ball rate. With the Cubs’ pitching staff leading in home runs allowed this season, Peterson’s 51.1% ground-ball percentage, ranking eighth in MLB, was a crucial addition. Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, highlighted Peterson’s ability to control the ball and capitalize on the Cubs’ strong defense.
Peterson’s debut game began with a hurdle, as his first pitch resulted in a home run by the Milwaukee Brewers. He remarked, “Obviously not how I wanted to start, but give me another ball and see how it goes.” Despite this initial challenge, Peterson stabilized his performance, allowing only two runs over 5 2/3 innings, contributing to the Cubs’ 8-2 victory. His resilience impressed Cubs manager Craig Counsell, who praised Peterson’s professionalism and ability to recover after a shaky start.
Throughout the game, Peterson displayed excellent control, limiting the Brewers to five hits without issuing a walk and striking out two on 69 pitches. The Cubs’ defense played a significant role in supporting Peterson, especially in the fifth inning. A key double play initiated by Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson helped neutralize the Brewers’ offense.
“I look at it from the other side, played them home and away, and it stands out,” Peterson noted regarding the Cubs’ defense. “You look around the infield, and it’s a lot of fun. It gives you a lot of confidence as a ground-ball guy that you can put it on the ground and those guys have your back, and they did today.”
The Cubs kept Peterson’s game plan straightforward following his trade, focusing on catcher Carson Kelly’s strategic game calling. The duo worked to quickly synchronize, managing to establish their approach in under 48 hours without a bullpen session. Pre-game, Counsell emphasized that Peterson’s confidence in his pitch decisions was crucial to his performance.
The Cubs’ offense also significantly contributed to the win. Seiya Suzuki hit a go-ahead two-run homer against Brewers’ lefty Kyle Harrison, and Ian Happ later added a three-run home run. This offensive surge helped snap the Cubs’ four-game losing streak against the Brewers. Despite recent injuries within their pitching roster, the Cubs have secured five wins on their current road trip.
Cubs designated hitter Ian Happ commented on the team’s resilience, saying, “The offense has done a great job over the last week just putting up a ton of runs. We’re confident the guys we have in the bullpen and the starting rotation, they’re going to show up and pitch big innings for us.” The Cubs plan to proceed with a bullpen game in the series finale, starting with Ryan Rolison.
