Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has stopped the promotions of over 40 senior officers to top military ranks this year. Roughly half of those affected are women or individuals from minority groups.
One significant case involves Rear Adm. Stephen D. Barnett. Navy leaders considered him the top candidate to lead the command responsible for overseeing Navy bases globally. His track record included managing the consequences of a major fuel spill in Hawaii that contaminated a base’s water supply, impacting thousands.
Despite his qualifications, Admiral Barnett faced opposition due to his involvement in promoting diversity within the Navy. During a secret vetting process, his past remarks on diversity were scrutinized. Ultimately, Secretary Hegseth bypassed Admiral Barnett in favor of a white officer ranked as the third choice by Navy leadership.
This decision forms part of a broader trend, with Secretary Hegseth blocking many promotions, affecting a diverse group of officers. These actions have sparked discussions about the representation and support of minority groups within the military’s hierarchy.
