The Denver Broncos claimed a 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, thanks to a 53-yard field goal in overtime by kicker Wil Lutz. The decisive moment came when Denver’s Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted a pass from Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, setting the Broncos in prime position to seal the win.
Seattle took the initial possession in overtime, facing a critical third-and-7. Darnold attempted a risky throw along the sideline, misjudging McMillian’s coverage. McMillian capitalized on the mistake, intercepting the pass at Seattle’s 43-yard line.
With Broncos head coach Sean Payton at the helm, Denver employed a straightforward strategy. They ran the ball three consecutive times, effectively managing the clock and positioning the ball for Lutz to take the final kick.
Earlier in the game, Denver exhibited strong tactical execution. The team’s efficient offense controlled the game and established a 14-3 lead by halftime. Touchdowns from running back J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey culminated in a dominant first half.
However, the second half revealed struggles for Denver’s offense. Quarterback Bo Nix managed only 107 passing yards with no significant downfield completions. Seattle responded with a determined comeback, narrowing Denver’s lead to 14-11 through a touchdown by George Holani and a two-point conversion from Darnold to Rashid Shaheed. In the closing minute, Seattle tied the game with a 34-yard field goal by Jason Myers to send the match into overtime.
Denver’s offense faltered in the second half. They accumulated a mere 36 yards on eight possessions, resulting in several three-and-outs. This left punter Jeremy Crawshaw executing frequent punts to relieve the pressure.
Despite offensive difficulties, Denver’s defense played an instrumental role. The absence of Patrick Surtain II did not hinder the defense as the front seven consistently pressured Darnold, accruing five sacks. Key defensive plays included a strip by Nik Bonitto, a fourth-quarter interception by Kris Abrams-Draine, and McMillian’s overtime interception.
Seattle racked up 353 total yards with Jaxon Smith-Njigba contributing significantly through 12 receptions for 134 yards. Yet, turnovers undermined Seattle’s efforts, granting Denver the upper hand.
The Broncos, now positioned at 4-2, trail the undefeated Kansas City in the standings. Despite the challenging game, the victory propels Denver forward with intentions to refine their offensive strategies before competing against the Arizona Cardinals.
