The San Antonio Spurs have injected drama into the NBA Finals by winning Game 3 against the New York Knicks. Playing in a packed Madison Square Garden, which included celebrities and President Trump, the Spurs took a 115-111 victory, reducing their series deficit to 2-1.
San Antonio overcame one of the loudest environments in Madison Square Garden’s history. They were ahead by 12 points in the first half, yet the Knicks clawed back to lead by seven points. Key players like OG Anunoby and Josh Hart hit shots to compensate for Jalen Brunson’s slow start. However, Victor Wembanyama’s standout performance helped the Spurs maintain a narrow lead in the final quarter, avoiding a potential series sweep. Historically, no team has won the championship after losing the first two Finals games at home.
Wembanyama posted impressive stats with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. His efficient play, coming off a turnover-filled Game 2, put him as the second-youngest player to reach such numbers in Finals history, behind Magic Johnson. Spurs’ Stephon Castle contributed 23 points while rookie Dylan Harper added 13.
The Knicks saw a record 13-game postseason win streak come to an end. Brunson netted 32 points on 25 shots, and Anunoby had 28 in New York’s first Finals game since 1999. Before the game, the MSG atmosphere was electric despite increased security due to Trump’s presence, leading to blockades around the venue and watch parties across all boroughs.
San Antonio executed with 10 more assists and committed fewer turnovers, shooting ten additional free throws than New York. With under two minutes remaining, Castle’s clutch three-pointer stretched San Antonio’s lead, which Brunson’s late efforts couldn’t overturn. De’Aaron Fox secured the win with a decisive basket.
Game 4 is set for Wednesday.
“Less mistakes, more control,”
During the tense fourth quarter, Wembanyama’s leadership was evident. Encouraging teammates like Dylan Harper after missed opportunities, he took on a more prominent role. Karl-Anthony Towns’ foul trouble didn’t deter the Knicks as they challenged a play that temporarily swung momentum. However, San Antonio held firm, retaking a double-digit lead through strategic use of foul calls.
Jordan Clarkson’s exchange of three-pointers in the third quarter kept the game tight. San Antonio entered the fourth quarter ahead by one, with Wembanyama fresh and poised for a crucial impact. Stephon Castle shone in the first half, exploiting defensive gaps, while Brunson’s performance was hindered by fouls.
Off the court, the scene was star-studded with 96 celebrities in attendance. The buzz continued with Cardi B performing at halftime, enthralling the MSG crowd.
Prior to the tip-off, enhanced security delays due to President Trump’s visit saw long queues for fans and media. Despite this, excitement ran high at Madison Square Garden, with only a few empty seats spotted.
The Knicks fans’ palpable energy underscores New York’s fervor for another championship. With Game 4 approaching, the battle for the NBA title remains intense.
