Dusty May’s decision to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks has stunned the NBA offseason. May leaves the Michigan Wolverines after Jason Kidd’s departure to take charge of a team featuring stars like Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, May expressed excitement about the job. “The alignment with the front office and ownership group,” he said, highlighting the chance to work with a young superstar and one of the best point guards in history.
May’s move follows a successful stint at Michigan, where he led the team to the 2026 national championship. Over his tenure, he achieved a 64-13 record, boosting his reputation as a top coaching talent.
His coaching journey is a notable success story. Before Michigan, he surprised many by leading Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023. Joining Michigan in 2024, he revitalized the program with a 124-26 record over four seasons.
May’s exit leaves Michigan in need of a new coach unexpectedly. The Wolverines boast a strong roster, including star Elliot Cadeau and promising player Trey McKenney. Under NCAA regulations, players may reconsider their positions once a new coach is appointed.
The Mavericks have much to improve after a 26-56 season, armed with the Nos. 9 and 30 picks in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft.
