Former NFL Star Chris Johnson Diagnosed with ALS
The NFL community received shocking news on Monday as Chris Johnson, one of the few players to achieve over 2,000 rushing yards in a single season, revealed his diagnosis with ALS. This condition, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, has a profound impact, gradually severing the brain’s communication with muscles.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, a former teammate from Johnson’s time with the Tennessee Titans, shared his thoughts on the situation. Fitzpatrick recalled their unique bond, noting that his 100th NFL touchdown pass was to Johnson, who later signed a football for him with a personal message. Johnson’s words gave Fitzpatrick a sense of pride and connection. “The amount of street credit I have from Chris Johnson calling me a cool white boy has always been awesome to me,” Fitzpatrick commented.
The diagnosis is a challenging reality for Johnson and those close to him. Fitzpatrick expressed his support, acknowledging the difficulty of having a sharp mind but a failing body. He emphasized the community’s hope and support for Johnson and his family during this difficult time.
Johnson’s social media post highlighted research showing a potential link between repetitive head trauma and ALS. Studies indicate NFL players might face a greater risk of developing ALS compared to the general population.
Despite the associated risks, Fitzpatrick reflected on his football career with no regrets, recognizing the impact it had on his life. He expressed willingness to support his children if they chose to pursue the sport, aware of the risks involved. As life progresses, Fitzpatrick noted, challenges arise, citing the loss of his mother and other personal experiences with ALS.
ALS, according to the ALS Association, is currently incurable. It progressively impairs abilities like walking, speaking, and eventually breathing. For Johnson, who played for teams like the Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals from 2008 to 2017, this diagnosis marks a difficult chapter.
As the former running back faces this battle, the football world rallies behind him, offering support and encouragement.
