In Evian-les-Bains, France, leaders at the Group of Seven summit expressed their support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s tentative agreement with Iran. The agreement aims to open the Strait of Hormuz and extend a ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron described it as a beneficial deal that could stabilize the region and improve economic conditions.
President Trump labeled the deal ‘historic’ and stated that other G7 leaders also praised it. U.S. officials shared details of the agreement, which is set to be formally signed in Switzerland. The U.S. will work to end sanctions on Tehran if a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is reached.
During the G7 summit, leaders focused on topics such as the future of artificial intelligence and economic growth. They discussed unfair market competition concerns regarding China’s subsidized exports. Leaders from India, South Korea, Kenya, and Brazil also attended the meeting.
A significant part of the agreement is reopening the Strait of Hormuz to oil tanker traffic. The G7 leaders discussed an international maritime mission led by France and the U.K. to protect vessels and ensure the removal of mines. Previously, Iran had closed the strait due to conflicts.
The deal also seeks to stop fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. G7 leaders support efforts to disarm Hezbollah and protect Lebanon’s territorial integrity. Israeli military actions in Lebanon have caused significant casualties and displacement.
The summit’s declarations included support for Ukraine against Russia and pledges to increase air defense deliveries. Efforts to fight the international drug trade and human trafficking were also highlighted. Trump defended U.S. military actions against drug smuggling in Latin America.
During his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump expressed optimism about finalizing a trade deal with India. He praised Modi as both a tough negotiator and a ‘beautiful-looking man,’ despite challenges in U.S.-India relations, particularly after an incident involving the death of Indian sailors in the Gulf of Oman.
