Kevin Pavlidis, known online as Snakeaholic, is both a python hunter and professional alligator wrestler. Recently, he assisted in capturing the longest live reticulated python found in Puerto Rico. This effort took place with the help of Proyectos Retic, a team dedicated to studying and managing the reticulated python population on the island.
The python caught by Pavlidis measured an impressive 18 feet 4 inches. The capture happened near El Hippie waterfall in Naguabo, Puerto Rico. To showcase the size of this python, eight individuals stood together to hold the snake.
The python was located after reports came in of it strangling a pet cat behind a residence. There were no details on the cat’s fate, as the hunters focused on capturing the snake. As Snakeaholic points out, these snakes pose a significant threat, capable of preying on larger animals.
In Puerto Rico, the reticulated python is a non-native species, similar to the situation with Burmese pythons in Florida, where Pavlidis resides. These snakes pose a risk to the ecological balance.
“It took all my tracking skills and 20 minutes of searching to find this snake in the jungle,” Pavlidis stated. The snake was pursued down a mountain after it was spotted.
Pavlidis emphasized the importance of removing such invasive predators. He considers this efforts as a significant step towards restoring the ecosystem’s balance in Puerto Rico.
While capturing these snakes may not be a typical pastime, Pavlidis underscores its necessity. Left unchecked, large snakes like this python can dominate an ecosystem, negatively impacting native wildlife.
He further stated that the python’s presence in Puerto Rico is a result of human error, highlighting the need for corrective actions to manage non-native species.
