GOP Senate Primary Heads to Runoff as Trump-Endorsed Candidate Faces Challenge

Appointed Senator Darline Graham faces a Republican Senate primary runoff against Representative Ralph Norman. This situation brings into question the influence of President Donald Trump’s endorsements. Graham, appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster following her brother Lindsey Graham’s passing, aims to secure a full six-year Senate term in the upcoming November elections. Trump endorsed her candidacy among 10 Republican contenders, including Norman, Representative Russell Fry, and former Governor Mark Sanford.

The runoff winner on August 25 will compete with Democrat Annie Andrews, a doctor who secured her party’s nomination in June. Graham, South Carolina’s first female Senate representative, lacks prior elected experience, a factor some voters viewed negatively in the primary, questioning the impact of Trump’s support.

“I understand that she’s lost a brother and someone special, and I sympathize with that. But, it’s not necessary to just give it to her,” said Republican voter Bob Howell from Lexington, SC. Regarding Trump’s backing of Graham, Howell added, “I like President Trump, but that doesn’t sway my vote.”

Previously, Trump’s preferred governor candidate, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, entered a runoff against state Attorney General Alan Wilson, who ultimately won after Trump’s dual endorsement. This reflects several instances where Trump-endorsed candidates have not secured Republican nominations for significant offices. The Republican runoff victor is favored in the November election, given no Democrat has won a Senate seat in South Carolina since 1998.

Darline Graham, aged 62, replaced her brother Lindsey, who passed away on July 11 following a cardiac arrest. Lindsey Graham had aimed for a fifth Senate term after winning a competitive June primary. Trump quickly offered his support to the younger Graham, endorsing her on Truth Social on July 17.

In her short Senate stint, Graham notably supported a measure imposing new sanctions on Russia and Iran. This legislation, initially championed by Lindsey Graham to put pressure on Russia, had Iran provisions added at Trump’s request before the Senate approved it overwhelmingly, naming it in Lindsey Graham’s honor.

“I’ve accomplished a lot in three weeks,” Darline Graham remarked post-vote, citing the sanctions bill and her vote to confirm Attorney General Todd Blanche. “I’m not being handed the seat. I know I must earn votes, so I’m working hard.” She anticipated the race proceeding to a runoff.

In Congress, Norman frequently aligns with Trump’s policies. However, Lindsey Graham was a closer Trump ally, demonstrated by Trump’s eulogy at his Washington National Cathedral service. With many voters supporting her opponents, Graham must quickly consolidate backing to maintain the Senate seat her family has held since 2003.
