Midwest Storms Cause Fatalities and Widespread Damage

Severe storms swept through the Midwest on Tuesday, leading to tragic deaths and extensive damage. In Indiana, a house explosion believed to be weather-related resulted in one fatality. A 4-year-old boy in Jennings County also lost his life when a tree fell on his home. Winds exceeding 80 mph were reported throughout the region.

Indiana Tragedies

The explosion in Portage, Indiana, occurred at around 12:20 p.m. The storm’s intensity delayed emergency responders, with blocked roads complicating access. Portage is a city approximately 30 miles southeast of Chicago. Fire Chief Chris Crail and Police Capt. Rob Maynard highlighted challenges in reaching the site. The storms were described as potentially the most severe in memory.

Every road had a tree down. Officers had to run to the site.

At another location in Jennings County, the child’s death was linked to storm conditions. Chief Deputy Cody Low confirmed that strong winds and storms were significant contributors.

Tornadoes in Illinois

Illinois experienced confirmed tornadoes near Chicago in southern Cook County and eastern Will County. Both displayed damage typical of EF-1 intensity, according to the National Weather Service.

Power Outages Across States

Over 1 million homes faced power cuts across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Ohio’s Columbus area recorded gusts surpassing 80 mph, causing extensive outages. AEP reported deploying over 2,000 workers for power restoration efforts, receiving assistance from neighboring states.

Emergency Declarations

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther warned residents of prolonged power disruptions, urging them to prepare for an altered lifestyle in the following days. In Portage, Mayor Austin Bonta declared an emergency, citing blocked roads and infrastructure damage.

Fire Incidents

In Frankfort, Illinois, Tammy McKee’s home was lost to a suspected fire caused by storm activity. The home, shared with her elderly mother, may have been struck by lightning or impacted by fallen power lines. McKee described hearing a loud explosion and subsequently evacuating due to smoke.

Ohio Emergency Measures

In Ohio, Governor Mark DeWine declared emergencies in Perry and Muskingum counties due to flooding. His office reported water rescues and evacuations in the affected areas.
