Human Remains Identified as Missing Los Alamos Employee in New Mexico
Human remains discovered last week in a New Mexico national forest have been confirmed to belong to Melissa Casias, an employee at Los Alamos National Laboratory who had been missing for nearly a year. The discovery occurred in the McGaffey Ridge area of Carson National Forest and was reported on Thursday. Identification was carried out by the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office.
The New Mexico State Police stated that a handgun was found alongside the remains, and the Medical Investigator’s Office is tasked with determining both the cause and manner of death. A representative for the Casias family mentioned they would refrain from commenting until an upcoming meeting with investigators. Los Alamos National Laboratory representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The location of the discovery is approximately six miles from Casias’ home and accessible by a state highway. Casias had been seen walking along this highway on the day she was reportedly missing. The missing persons report was filed on June 26 last year after her supervisor contacted her husband regarding her absence from work. Casias was 53 years old and had been employed at a federal energy research institution along with her husband, Mark Casias.
On the day of her disappearance, Melissa Casias had dropped her husband at the laboratory, stating she would complete a task before returning home. However, she did not return. Their daughter, Sierra, discovered Melissa’s personal items, including keys and a cellphone, which had been reset to factory settings at their home in Ranchos de Taos. On the same day, a family acquaintance observed her walking eastbound on State Road 518.
Mark Casias later reviewed documents indicating Melissa was under considerable stress, though specifics were not disclosed. While police have not dismissed the possibility of foul play, statements from State Police Sgt. Ricardo Breceda last year hinted that Casias might have vanished by choice. Investigations are ongoing, and the State Police have expressed their condolences to the Casias family.
