ICE Officer Saves Child from Drowning in Florida Pool
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, Gregory Simmonds, demonstrated quick heroism when he saved a child from drowning in a pool in Pasco County, Florida. This act occurs amid criticism faced by the agency regarding immigration detention facilities.
Simmonds was at the community pool when he observed a child floating unconscious. Surveillance footage captured his immediate response as he jumped into the pool fully clothed to rescue the child. He swiftly carried the child onto dry land, where CPR was performed.
This officer swiftly sprung to action and delivered life-saving medical care to this 6-year-old who drowned, said Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis.
Simmonds, part of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Tampa, continued resuscitation efforts until the child regained consciousness. According to ICE, the child is expected to make a full recovery.
Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Corporal J. Leathers commended Simmonds, stating his decisive actions were key to the child’s survival.
His actions directly contributed to saving the life of the child and reflect exceptional courage and selflessness,Leathers noted.
This incident marks another instance of DHS officers responding effectively in emergencies. Similar actions have been seen previously, including an ICE agent’s assistance at JFK Airport in March, where a child was in medical distress.
Despite facing public opposition from protesters outside facilities, ICE officers continue their duties vigilantly. Recent events have included multiple agents rescuing a child from a drowning incident at a hotel pool in Minnesota.
These stories highlight the commitment and bravery of ICE agents as they continue to protect individuals and communities.
