Judge Allows UFC Event at White House South Lawn
A federal judge has permitted the White House to host a UFC event this weekend on the South Lawn. This event, planned to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, coincides with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The event faced legal challenges, but U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled against blocking it.
The legal group seeking to halt the event claimed that using the White House lawn for such an occasion was inappropriate. However, Mehta determined the plaintiffs lacked standing to prevent the event. He emphasized that they failed to demonstrate irreparable harm and delayed their lawsuit, which weakened their case.
In the context of an emergency application, coupled with the known UFC fight date, the plaintiffs unreasonably delayed bringing suit.
The plaintiffs, represented by the Public Integrity Project, aimed to stop the construction of structures like The Claw, a 92-foot-tall steel framework. Yet, Mehta noted these structures would be temporary, dismantled quickly after the event.
The lawsuit described Trump’s ‘UFC Freedom 250’ event as improperly benefiting from public venues. It noted high VIP package prices and suggested the event was a commercial venture. The White House dismissed these claims, comparing the UFC event to other public gatherings in the capital.
Attorney Brendan Ballou expressed disappointment with the ruling but vowed to continue addressing what he sees as corruption tied to public monuments.
The lawsuit named the National Park Service and Interior Department as defendants. The case highlights ongoing legal battles with the former president, extending from his term into related controversies. Judge Mehta, appointed by President Barack Obama, has previously presided over cases involving Trump.
