The initial accolades for New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns in the NBA Finals have quickly faded. After a Game 3 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, marking the Knicks’ first defeat in 46 days, Towns has sparked criticism for his lack of effort in the final minutes of the games, particularly in the fourth quarter.
Towns has struggled to score in the closing moments. According to @NBAcrazystats on X, he has failed to score any points in the fourth quarter across the first three Finals games. In contrast, he scored 50 points in the first three quarters of these games but hasn’t managed to convert in the decisive periods.
Despite Towns having the most fourth-quarter minutes on his team with 29.1 minutes, more than guard Jalen Brunson’s 26.9 minutes, Brunson has accumulated 32 points during this time while Towns has not scored.
At the beginning of the series, Towns received praise for his performance against Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. However, in Game 3, Wembanyama excelled, scoring a game-high 32 points compared to Towns’ 11. This change in performance has shifted opinions about Towns’ contribution during the Finals.
Regarding Towns’ reluctance to take on responsibility, ESPN’s Alan Hahn remarked on Get Up, “There were times that offense did struggle because he didn’t want the ball. And that was a problem.” This criticism highlights the need for a more assertive showing from Towns.
With Game 4 set for Wednesday, the Knicks need more output from their 30-year-old center. If Towns fails to step up, New York risks squandering a 2-0 series lead, which could result in a significant disappointment in recent Finals history.
