Former White House press secretary Katie Zacharia shared three key lessons from her short stint leading the Trump administration’s communications team. “The biggest lessons are to stay true to your character, focus on the work in front of you, and refuse to be defined by the critics,” Zacharia stated, according to a New York Post opinion piece.
Zacharia, known for her work as a conservative commentator and communications adviser for President Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform, stepped into the role on October 9 after Karoline Leavitt’s departure earlier this year. Her tenure was brief, lasting only five days from her first briefing on October 13 until her dismissal on October 16. Her time in the position was marred by controversy and criticism, particularly regarding her failure to pass the California bar exam. Trump terminated her role, citing unfair treatment by the press.
Despite the challenges, Zacharia expressed gratitude to the president for the opportunity. She expressed pride in accepting the role, holding firm in her beliefs, and showing resilience in the face of criticism. “Answering the president’s call to serve was an honor, and my kids were able to see their mom step up for one of the most sought-after jobs in the world,” she noted. “I’m proud I said yes, stood firm in what I believe, and kept supporting the president even when the circumstances weren’t ideal for me—showing my children what courage looks like in the face of criticism.”
Currently, there is no announcement regarding her successor. However, several conservative figures, including Laura Loomer and George Santos, have shown interest in the position. Santos, a former congressman expelled amid scandals, expressed his willingness to serve, jokingly noting he would “jump to serve POTUS as press secretary in a heartbeat.” Loomer, also a conservative commentator, publicly expressed her interest as well.
The reasons for Zacharia’s departure included significant scrutiny during her first briefing and ongoing controversy over her professional qualifications. Trump advised her to reconsider her role, which eventually led to her dismissal. In a heartfelt message on social media, Zacharia thanked Trump, describing him as “a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man.” She expressed her admiration for his efforts to improve America, stating it was an honor to work for him.
