The U.S. Park Police has released CCTV images and video from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in relation to an ongoing investigation into the ‘destruction of government property.’ Public assistance is requested to identify a person seen near the water.
The footage, captured on June 19, shows an individual kneeling and reaching into the pool around 3:30 p.m. However, authorities have not described this person as a suspect or provided any specifics regarding their gender. They are solely seeking to identify the individual in connection with the probe.
Authorities have requested anyone with information regarding the individual’s identity to contact: [email protected] or call (202) 379-4877.
The request follows increased security measures and attention at the site following former President Donald Trump’s claims about damage to the newly renovated pool due to vandalism.
Trump Claims Gruesome Vandalism
On Wednesday, Trump alleged the Reflecting Pool had been ‘gruesomely vandalized,’ citing damage such as cuts to the pool’s lining and chemical use. He later assured that those responsible had been largely caught and were facing prosecution, noting that the site was again looking ‘perfect.’
Despite the active investigation and release of footage, there appears to be no visual evidence of the damage described by Trump. Officials have yet to publicly substantiate claims about the scale or causes of the issues.
Vandalism Claims Amid Pool Problems
The appeal introduces a new aspect to a controversy that has persisted since the pool’s reopening following a renovation ordered by Trump earlier this year. The president wanted the pool resurfaced in ‘American flag blue,’ stating that it had become dirty and neglected.
By early June, the administration claimed the project was nearly complete, yet problems quickly emerged. The pool turned green due to algae blooms, and sections of the blue coating started peeling from the basin floor.
Some administration officials attributed these issues to alleged vandalism, but the timing raised questions, with visible problems surfacing shortly after the pool reopened.
Experts have suggested that multiple factors might contribute to the pool’s difficulties, such as residual algae, water conditions, surface temperature, moisture, adhesion issues, chemical treatments, and environmental stress.
In response to the situation, security has been tightened around the landmark. Fencing encloses parts of the pool, and increased U.S. Park Police patrols ensure a more noticeable law enforcement presence. The Interior Department informed Newsweek that barriers were initially planned for Independence Day but were erected earlier due to concerns over potential further damage.
This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
